In the early 1980s, Mr. Denis Ducos took over the property from his parents with his wife, Léa, an amateur painter as well as a nature-lover and great wine fancier. Jean-Denis looks after the property, the winemaking and winegrowing with the help of a reliable employee, and Léa looks after the administrative and commercial side of the business.
Together, they created the Haut-Grignon label in 1985, which represents their two zodiac signs (Leo and Aquarius). Madame Ducos herself designed the Château Fauconnin label. The estate used to be a vineyard in former times and has now been renovated by considerable re-planting, and enlarged by buying parcels of old vines.
A new vat-house was built in 1985 and a barrel store with a tasting room in the summer of 1996. Wines marketed under the name Haut-Grignon are elaborated from the oldest vines hand-harvested when at full ripeness.
After a very careful winemaking process, the wine is aged in oak barrels for a 14-month period. After being fined in the traditional way (fresh egg-white), these wines show a deep, clear and bright color, with strong aromas typically from Médoc.
From the younger vines are made the Château Fauconnin wines, matured and aged in vat with the same care than their big brother. They are charming with their silkiness and mellowness.
Worked carefully in respect of tradition, with no sophistication, Château Haut-Grignon offer an attractive and harmonious version of the vintage, lovely ripe fruit aromas, firm but round tannins.
